Divine Appeal Reflection - 206
Today, consider in Divine Appeal 206: "Cross yourself often with the sign of the Cross."
The Sign of the Cross is not just a customary gesture—it is a deeply personal act of faith, a silent yet resounding confession that we belong entirely to our Adorable Jesus.Christians have traced the cross over themselves since the beginning of the Church, not out of habit, but as a personal response to God's presence. It is a moment when heaven touches earth, a wordless plea inviting the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit to enter every corner of our lives. Each time we cross ourselves, we reach out to our Adorable Jesus, who gave His life for us, His arms stretched wide on the Cross in a love so fierce it conquered sin and death.
This small exercise has meanings that are quite extensive. And indeed, that sign of the Cross is much more than a mere act; it is a deep scream crying out: Jesus, I am Yours . As Saint John Chrysostom reminds us, that Cross became the source of grace and the shield of faith, protecting us from all evils, and the weapon driving out darkness. The very act of living under the banner of Christ's victory makes us children of light. Every intention, thought, and action is offered to God as we touch our forehead, heart, and shoulders. By making the Sign of the Cross with awareness and love, as Saint Francis de Sales wrote, we are drawn closer to Jesus and affirm our decision to follow Him.
It grounds us, the Sign of the Cross, when life gets frantic. It guides us back when we've gotten lost, gives us courage when we're weak, and ends our prayers with faith in His kindness. So, this kind act satisfies the holy mandate of Saint Teresa of Avila, who rightly warned that everything must have Jesus developed inside it from time to time. This constant reminder gives us a thought that, whether we are jubilant or tormented with grief, Jesus remains by our side-our strength, our companion, and our refuge. That thought reassures us that we are never truly alone.
In the end, the Sign of the Cross is a living, breathing prayer rather than a routine act. Whether we are waking up, preparing our meals, passing a church, or falling asleep, it impacts our days. It becomes a silent prayer in terrifying situations, a whisper of thanks in joyful ones, and a firm declaration of faith in complex ones. With every movement, we communicate without using words: "Jesus, I trust You. Jesus, I need You . Jesus, You have my love." We discover serenity, strength, and the unwavering certainty that Jesus is always and forever with us in this small but powerful symbol.
Prayer:
Our Adorable Jesus, each time we cross ourselves, let it be more than a habit—make it a heartbeat of love for You. Draw us into Your mercy, steady us in Your presence, and remind us that You are near. May this holy sign speak what words cannot.
Sr. Anna Ali of the Most Holy Eucharist, intercede for us.
