THE SECRET OF JESUS' BITTER PASSION

Divine Appeal Reflection - 204

Today, consider in Divine Appeal 204:"It pleases Me to tell you this secret; in My bitter Passion I was grieved so much as I felt My sufferings were so painful and disagreeable to My Humanity. From all this source flowed other dispositions."

Our Adorable Jesus, in His Divine Appeal 204, reveals a profound mystery of His bitter Passion — the immense grief and suffering He endured, not only in His physical torments but also in the deep anguish of His Humanity. His sufferings were not merely external but touched the very core of His being, allowing other interior dispositions to flow from this wellspring of sorrow. This unseen suffering is a reflection of how Jesus carried the burden of sin and the separation that people made between God and themselves. It serves as a reminder that His Passion, which included both the unbearable suffering of His soul and the agonizing pain of His body, was the pinnacle of divine love (cf. St. Alphonsus Liguori, 'The Passion and the Death of Jesus Christ').

In His Passion, Jesus—who is both fully God and fully man—went through the depths of human agony and voluntarily submitted His humanity to the Father's plan, saving the world. Though His sufferings were grievous, they were the pathway through which grace and mercy poured forth for all souls. His sorrow became the source of our healing, and His wounds opened the floodgates of divine compassion, calling us to respond with hearts attuned to His love (cf. CCC 601; Isaiah 53:5).The intense physical and emotional suffering of our Adorable Jesus during His Passion became a deep wellspring from which other interior dispositions emerged — such as His boundless compassion for sinners, His silent acceptance of injustice, His unwavering obedience to the Father’s will, and His ardent desire for the salvation of souls. These dispositions were not separate from His suffering but were mysteriously intertwined with it, showing that His agony gave rise to even greater acts of love, mercy, and self-offering.

When we consider this, we see that the hidden grief of our Adorable Jesus is a call to an inward mortification and a closer connection with His Passion. Like Him, we are called to accept the unsaid pains of everyday existence and offer them as acts of love and restitution for the salvation of souls. This silent participation in His Passion strengthens our faith and teaches us the value of redemptive suffering — a participation in the mystery of salvation (cf. St. John of the Cross; Colossians 1:24).

Let us then remain close to our Adorable Jesus, especially in moments of interior trials, knowing that from His sorrow flowed an ocean of mercy. May we lift up our souls, shedding all mediocrity, and allow His Passion to transform us from within. His bitter sufferings were not in vain but bore the fruit of eternal redemption for those who open their hearts to His love (cf. Romans 5:8).

Prayer:

Our Adorable Jesus, in Your bitter Passion, You endured hidden sorrow for the salvation of souls. We offer You our daily sufferings, united with Yours, for the conversion of souls and reparation for sins committed against Your Real Presence in the Blessed Sacrament. Strengthen us in love and humility. Amen.
